The principal mission of the Maher Center Commercial Services is to provide employment opportunities to individuals with developmental disabilities.
Much of the work is done under government contracts as part of the federal AbilityOne Program which coordinates its activities with nonprofit organizations such as the Maher Center to provide employment for persons with a wide range of disabilities.
Northeast Linen and Laundry Service, for example, provides services to U.S. Navy facilities in Newport, RI, Groton, CT and Portsmouth, NH, to the Rhode Island Veterans Home, Bristol, RI, The RI State Police training academy and the Alton Jones Campus of the University of Rhode Island.
The program also provides janitorial services to the Naval War College, Newport, RI and housekeeping services to the healthcare facilities at the Newport Navy Base.
Participants in the Commercial Services Program receive comprehensive support and supervision on the job, including an individual job coach. Many also rely on the Center's Transportation Services for their daily commute.
Well over 100 Maher Center participants are employed within the various facets of the Integrated Employment Program.
The Maher Center offers a variety of services to businesses looking for quality work at a reasonable cost. The individuals with developmental disabilities that comprise our work force are proud of the work they do. They're motivated by the opportunity to be employed, to be engaged as fully as possible in life experiences and to live their lives with dignity and respect.
Some 100 Maher Center participants with developmental disabilities typically are employed among the various contract services. All employees are closely supervised, receive ongoing job training and are mentored by an individual job coach.
We offer a variety of services, primarily to state and federal government entities, on a large-scale, contract basis. These services are also available to and applicable to the operations of many businesses and educational institutions.
These services include:
Commercial laundry services, both customer owned goods and rental goods:
Northeast Linen & Laundry Service, for example, processes some 850,000 pounds of laundry annually for customers such as the U.S. Navy in Groton, CT, Portsmouth, NH and Newport, RI. We also service the State of Rhode Island to include the University of Rhode Island and Roger Williams University as well as the Veterans Home in Bristol.
Our janitorial teams provide services to the Naval War College (NWC), the Surface Warfare Officers School (SWOS) and the Naval Underwater War Center (NUWC) with a high level of "spit & polish." We also serve the Naval Hospital Clinic New England (NHCNE) to demanding medical standards.
Maher Center Transportation Services amass more than 1 million miles a year providing rides to individuals with disabilities. The program is an essential component in accomplishing one of the Center's fundamental missions, to provide employment opportunities for adults with developmental disabilities.
The 30-plus members of the Transportation Services staff move most of the individuals in the Maher Center employment program—many of whom do not work a standard nine to five workday— to and from their jobs each day in the Day Workshop Program, the Garden Center, Northeast Linen and Laundry Service and other locations where Integrated Employment programs operate.
