Our Goal:  To provide a supportive and fun social environment to individuals with disabilities by giving them a variety of opportunities and choices available in their communities.

 

Our Philosophy: The Recreation Department’s philosophy is to provide a quality program than enhances each individual’s abilities in a positive manner.  We are committed to providing growth by focusing on capabilities not disabilities.  Through a variety of choices our clients obtain a feeling of self- worth and confidence that carries into daily living.  New friendships are developed and relationships are formed.

Hi-Lites or Activity Favorites:

 

 

Dinner/ Dances:  Are held on a monthly basis for 9 months out of the year. All are welcome to join in for a fun filled evening.

 

Out to Dinner and  Movie Night:  This is a favorite of everyone.  These are scheduled on various nights throughout the month.

 

 

Seasonal

 

Sailing:  Our sailing program is in our 9th season and is scheduled from June to August in conjunction with Shake–A–Leg in Newport , Rhode Island at Fort Adams State Park .  All levelsOf disabilities are welcome.  A sailing registration form must be filled out prior to participating. shakealeg.org

 

 

Special Olympics:  Each year in April The Maher Mariners Special Olympics athletes compete in the East Bay Area Games hosted by the Salve Regina University at Rogers High School in Newport.  These games are a pre- requisite for all track and field participants who compete in the State Summer Games at the University of Rhode Island . Other competitions are also held throughout the state as qualifying events for URI for swimming, bowling, weight – lifting, and cycling. The State Summer Games Competition is held at URI each year on the first weekend in June.  Winter Sports competitions are also held each year for figure skating, speed skating, cross country skiing and downhill skiing at Yawgoo Valley in March. Special Olympics RI is also represented at the summer and Winter World Games and National Games all held every 4 years.

 

Competitive team sport opportunities are offered through Special Olympics Rhode Island.  A representative for the Mariners Track team lights the Olympic torch at the East Bay Area Games at Salve Regina University – April 2006.

Recreation Calendar of Events:  Each month a calendar of events is mailed home. These events fill quickly therefore we recommend you return your calendar sheet to the Recreation Dept as son as possible. Included on the calendar sheet are activity fee’s, which are do on the day of the activity.  The following monthly events calendars are just a sample of those events that may be scheduled.

Transportation:  We provide door-to-door service for all those involved in our Recreation programs.

 

Requirements:  A Recreation Registration Form is required for all participants. This includes Name, D.O.B. ETC.

 

Medical:  An updated medical form is to be completed before participating in activities. A complete Special Olympics medical form may be used for a medical requirement form.

 

Volunteers: Volunteers are always welcome to assist in our programs All volunteers are required to fill out a volunteer form and have a back ground check completed by the Agency.
