JANITORIAL SERVICES PROGRAM

The James L. Maher Center has provided Janitorial Services to the US Navy since April 1996.  Over the past ten years this program has grown from maintaining one building of approximately 100,000 square feet to, at present, 15 buildings covering approximately 1,000,000 square feet of combined office, classroom and laboratory space.  In meeting this requirement, the Maher Center employs approximately 45 individuals with severe disabilities.  Work is performed in a fully integrated setting consisting of Navy and Civil Service employees, thereby affording our employees an opportunity to interact in a professional environment.

The primary mission of the Janitorial Services Program is to provide a clean and safe work environment to the varied Navy and Civil Service employees at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC), the Naval War College (NWC) and the Surface Warfare Officers School (SWOS).  In furtherance of this mission, the Maher Center utilizes the latest in equipment and supplies as well as the devoted efforts of a superlative workforce.  Our workforce prides itself on the ability to not only carry out the routine responsibilities of our contract but also to respond to emerging circumstances in a timely and cost-effective manner.

Work shifts are available either full or part time.  A typical workday may consist of any of the varied tasks associated with janitorial services, e.g. vacuuming carpets; sweeping and mopping tile floors; emptying trash; cleaning bathrooms; dusting offices; washing windows and, for those who are up to the challenge, shampooing carpets; stripping, waxing and burnishing resilient tile floors.

Opportunities are available in this program for individuals who require the support of a job coach to attain the skills necessary to succeed in this work setting as well as individuals who are capable of working without direct, daily oversight.
