FOOD SERVICE PROGRAM

The Maher Center has provided Food Services to the US Navy since October 1991.  At its peak in 2004, this program provided employment opportunities to 70 individuals with severe disabilities.  Indeed, even after a series of budget- induced reductions, the Food Service program continues to provide meaningful employment to nearly 50 individuals.  The success of our employees has been such that we have consistently been accorded a 5 Star rating, the highest rating possible, by inspection teams from other Navy commands.  Most recently, we have been nominated once again by the Navy Northeast Region to compete in the prestigious Ney award competition to determine the outstanding Food Service operation in the US Navy, a competition that we have previously won.

The primary mission of the Food Service Program is to provide the best dining experience possible to students of the various School Commands located at Naval Station Newport including, among others, the Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS), the Officer Indoctrination School (OIS), the BOOST (Broadened Opportunity for Officer Selection and Training) program and, in the near future, the Officer Training School (OTS) and the Supply Officers School.

At any given time, employees may expect to feed in excess of 800 people, three meals per day, 365 days a year.  The Maher Center prides itself on meeting the challenge of ensuring that the sailors get fed regardless of weather conditions.  We have met our obligations to the Navy through hurricanes as well as blizzards, thanks to the efforts of our dedicated staff.

Work shifts are available either full time or part time.  A typical workday may consist of any of the varied tasks associated with food service, e.g. setting up and replenishing serving lines, salad bars and drink bars; serving the meal; policing the dining room; working in the scullery (that’s the dishwashing room for landlubbers) or the pot and pan room; cashiering; and all of the between-meals cleaning necessary to maintain the facility in tiptop shape.

Due to the demanding requirements and occasionally hectic pace of this work environment these jobs may not be for everyone.  But for those who are up to a challenge, the wages and benefits, as well as the pride of accomplishment are unmatched.
