What is the James L. Maher Center?

Funding comes from the Department of Mental Health, Retardation and Hospitals, Department of Human Services, the Division of ORS, grants and private donations, sub-contract income along with contract income from our Federal Contracts program.

What is the mission of the James L. Maher Center?

Thomas Carlyle stated our mission best when he wrote “Let each become all that he was created capable of being; expand, if possible to his full growth and show himself at length in his own shape and stature be what they may.” In order to fulfill this mission the James L. Maher Center is committed to the following set of goals.

·        To create opportunities for people with developmental disabilities that enhances their image as contributing members of their community.

·        To assist individuals with developmental disabilities in expressing their feelings and their choices

·        To encourage and assist individuals with developmental disabilities in creating social relationships, community relationships and work independence.

·        Above all, to advocate for the rights, the dignity and respect for all individuals with developmental disabilities.

What are some of the areas in which I can expect training if I were to attend the Maher Center?

There are many essential skills needed to live successfully in the community.  Among those skills we teach at the Maher Center are:

·        Grocery shopping

·        Cooking healthy meals

·        How to access essential services, i.e. emergency, doctors, case management, etc.

·        The use of public transportation

·        Adult Education services

·        Community Service Skills

What are some of the after work opportunities offered through the Maher Center?

·        We are prepared to assist individuals who may want to volunteer at the Knights of Columbus, your local church, or local animal shelter or any other place of choice

·        Becoming a member of the “Black Light” cast, or participating in an organized leisure activities program or exploring your own talents from scrap booking to painting to photography

Does the James L. Maher center encourage independence for individuals with disabilities?

The James L. Maher Center strongly adheres to that principle as expressed by Thomas Carlyle “Let each become all that he was created capable to being.” We couldn’t agree more.

Our mission is to provide opportunities as well as choices, to teach the decision making process so that good decisions can be made.  It is then our responsibility to accept those decisions once made.

In the continuation of Thomas Carlyle’s quote he goes on to say “expand, if possible to his full growth and show himself in his own shape and stature be what they may.”

To the James L. Maher Center this part of the quote reflects our responsibility to provide programs and opportunities that allows each person to grow and to become as independent as they can be.  We believe that each person is different, and that we need to create different opportunities and expect different choices and decisions.

Recognizing that each person is different in terms of their needs and wants, we have developed and we continue to develop a variety of options and choices.
